While pyjamas - from the Hindi "paejama", meaning "leg covering" - had become established nightwear for men since the 1870s, it was seen as adventurous for a woman to wear trousers of any kind, especially in public.

The force for change was the French fashion designer Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel, who decided baggy pyjama-style trousers - complete with a loose-fitting shirt or a sleeveless top - could combine elegance and comfort.

As early as 1918, she began wearing "beach pyjamas". With their gender-confusing suggestion of the boudoir, they were seen as shocking, but such was Chanel's influence that they became popular among rich women by the mid-1920s.

These unique beach pyjamas date back to 1928 and were given as a gift in Germany that year. The pyjamas were made in Japan for the European market. Few pieces from this period have survived from Japan. These pyjamas are therefore an absolute rarity. It is made of Japanese silk and consists of trousers, a sleeveless top and a small bag made of the same silk. The ensemble also includes matching flanier shoes, a summer hat (cloche), a belt strap and jewels made of coral and bone. In 1928, this way of strolling in a German Baltic or North Sea resort was absolute fashionable.

The ensemble is in very good condition. Only the light-colored trousers have a few stains. Very, very rare from this period.

The cloche is a very pretty one in ecru, red and dark gold. The crown is fine net lace. Missing lining. Crown: ~ 21"-21.5".  The Gold Lamé Flapper shoes are stamped on sole: „C. & J. Clark * Ltd Street * TOR * Made in England“. Original buttons. The shoes are in very good condition. Little sings of wear.
